The second phase of the $400 Million Rail Runner project—part of Governor Richardson’s Investment Partnership—will provide commuter rail service between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The New Mexico Department of Transportation is working on extending the service to Santa Fe by December 2008.

The contract for Phase II of the New Mexico Rail Runner Express was awarded to the joint venture of Twin Mountain Construction II Company and HERZOG Group in August 2007.

The design-build contract will allow the Department to utilize the services of HNTB, a nationally renowned design firm. HNTB will work with Twin Mountain/HERZOG group as part of the $115 million contract.

The Phase II route will run from La Bajada up through Waldo Canyon and enter the I-25 median just north of the rest area to up to Santa Fe. The train will run on existing BNSF and Santa Fe Southern tracks and will include an additional 18 miles of new track.

Construction on Phase II began in September 2007 and was completed in December 2008.
