GRIP I 40 - San Mateo Interchange
News!
_____________________________________________ Built in the 1960's, the San Mateo Interchange crossing I-40 currently handles a traffic flow of 50,000 cars a day. In the next 20 years, that number is expected to grow to more than 60,000. Rebuilding this interchange will accommodate the reconstruction and widening of I-40, address the current interchange geometric deficiencies, reduce the interchange congestion and improve traffic flow and replace the aging bridge. Included in the $41 million reconstruction project are drainage improvements, noise mitigation measures, signals and lighting, bicycle and pedestrian (ADA compliant) routes and landscaping and aesthetics, as well as the reconstruction of Interstate 40 from Carlisle to San Mateo. The study team selected Alternate 5, the modified diamond with loop (northbound to westbound) design, at the conclusion of the Detailed Evaluation of Alternates Study. The study team will evaluate the design further during the upcoming Environmental Documentation phase of the project. The study team appreciates input from the public on the project and will continue to address the public’s comments in the upcoming phase. Click here to see Alternate 5 Map. Construction began October 20, 2008 and will last approximately 400 calendar days. The project was completed on November 18, 2009 Traffic and Detours For up-to-date traffic information visit www.nmroads.com or dial 511. |
