This section of highway, which is east of Carlsbad, is a four lane route with aging pavement. Crews will renovate four sections of U.S. 62/180 for the $35 million project. The work begins at the Eddy/ Lea county line between Carlsbad and Hobbs, continues east through Hobbs and ends at the Texas state line. The work will create a safer highway and help accommodate increased traffic on the route into the future. The improvements are also important for trade between the United States and Mexico.

Constructors Inc. reconstructed a 12 mile stretch of road for this project – from milepost 62.44 to milepost 74.4; Fisher Sand & Gravel completed pavement preservation work on 16 miles of the higway in March 2007; and Armstrong Construction Co., Inc. reconstructed about 5 miles from MP 99.7 to MP 102 in August 2007 and in October 2008 substantially completed 4 miles of pavement rehabilitation. The cost of all four projects is estimated at nearly $29 million.
